Choosing the Type: Information to Include on Birth Announcements

There is so much to think about when it comes to designing your child’s birth announcements. One of the most important things to think about is what to include on your announcement. How much and what type of information is appropriate for the birth announcement text?

The child’s name is the main piece of information every birth announcement should include. The full name, as it appears on the birth certificate should always be included as should the parent’s names. You can of course include nicknames and shortened version of the name but the formal name is a must.

The date of birth announces the specific day your child came into existence, began living and will celebrate their birthday. This is the date people scribble onto their calendars and write in their address books, or these days, post on their homepage. Another must include.

The weight and length of the newborn are traditional statistics associated with birth announcement but not really a necessity. These stats are something women love to know and are always an appropriate addition to the text. Birth stats for women are comparable to fishing tales for men. Gotta know it so I can beat it.

Other people like to include the name of the hospital or birthing center on their announcements. There is nothing wrong with this but it’s not essential. Most people will already know this information in advance and it doesn’t add that much to the card.

Things that should not be included in a birth announcement are pretty obvious: hours of labor, drugs taken, stitches received. These are the follow up stories between your friends and families and not appropriate for a formally printed announcement card.

And remember, the vital information on a birth announcement is the part where misspellings or mistakes usually occur. Proof read your text well and be sure before you print and mail.
