What to Buy and How to Spend: Determining a Budget for Birth Announcements

The range of birth announcements on the market today is quite broad and it can be hard for first time parents to know what they should spend and what they are comfortable spending on birth announcements. Below is what I have found in my own research and I think it comes pretty close to average prices covered in baby buying guides. I’m all about saving money so this blog is geared toward getting the best for the budget you have.
Some of the cheapest birth announcement cards can be found in retail stores, especial bargain and closeout stores. The problem is most of these announcements look cheap. If you are lucky enough to find something that doesn’t make the best news of your life look like an elementary school project or a dollar store special good for you. I doubt it will happen. Remember, cheap bulk cards don’t include your child’s photograph or custom printing.
Making your own birth announcement may seem like the cheapest option out there and it can be if it’s right for you. My advice? If you aren’t creative, haven’t looked for a bargain in the craft stores or have never made a custom card before, the time to do these things for the first time is not right before your baby’s impending birth. For creative types, making things from scratch is soothing; for the rest of us it could bring on early labor. And if you mess it up? Well double your budget because you still have to get the announcement completed.
It may be hard to believe but the less money you have the easier it is to opt for the custom printing option. A lot of the big online printing companies offer a nice range of birth announcements for less than a dollar a piece. They run specials that include fifty percent discounts or the first ten cards free all the time. If you combine online printing with a coupon code, you can get a really professional birth announcement at a great price.
Save money on every type of birth announcement by taking the photograph yourself. Avoid the added expense of the professional photo shoot and the time for proofing appointments. Work in your own time in or under budget and the final result should look wonderful and feel great. And keep in mind this is a one time expense with a keepsake that you’ll have for life; a few dollars is certainly worth it.
